VODUN: THE STONEMAN, SERVITUDE AND PATIENCE/ OR…WHEN ONE TRIES TO HELP BUT ONLY HEARS COMPLAINTS
The short video below depicts a stone man trying to save a small village from the impending doom of a huge rolling boulder. But during his efforts the village’s inhabitants pull out their weapons and attack the stone man. The stone man, upon the realization of these attacks, decides to step aside and allow the boulder to follow it’s natural course thus demolishing the small village and all of its inhabitants.
Metaphorically speaking this is often how one, who is an authentic server of the spirits, feels when those, in the diaspora, complain and rally against their genuine efforts. Many of us have been so disconnected from Africa, due to the transatlantic slave trade or from various other reasons, that we become comfortable in our religious nonsense or inaccurate spiritual rhetoric. Those visiting Africa and returning with their mouths dripping with lies of initiations are systematically being exposed. And, many who have been selling their inaccurate brand of African spirituality, for decades, resist and/or fear the change that authentic African spirituality is making in the diaspora. But that change is coming whether we like it or not because it is not up to us; but, it is the work of the spirits themselves.
What the spirits have that is often difficult for those of us working in the diaspora trenches however is “patience”. The spirits possess it in abundance; and, it is something that is a daily challenge for me personally. Without my daily walk with and guidance from the spirits I would have given up a long time ago. It has been my cross to bear. One, as I have, often serves in obscurity; but, little by little those destined to do so wake up to the gentle proddings of their ancestors. And when one of these children makes it across that finish line…just one…the ancestors and the divine spirits rejoice. It is so worthwhile!
That is why, for me, patience is such an important virtue. It comes directly from the divinities, themselves, and is one of the fruits of the spirits. It saves lives. There will be many who refuse to hear, many who will complain against you and malign you in order to cling to the status quo of their own brand of self-righteousness. But it is not our will to be done but that of the spirits. So, do not give up hope; keep holding on and employ patience. Do not step aside as the stone man did. Dig in both your heels and let the spirits be your strength. And while you are engaged, dug in and holding that boulder of doom at bay, the spirits will build a fortified wall surrounding your feet in order to save those to whom they have chosen.
