  1. A 59-year-old man who repeatedly raped and indecently assaulted four young girls could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

William Owusu-Akyeaw was locked up for 28 years on Friday after being convicted of seven rapes and five indecent assaults spanning 17 years – 1987 to 2004.

He was brought to justice after one of his victims found the courage to go to police eight months ago.

Owusu-Akyeaw, of Worcester Park in Sutton, south London, should not be considered for release until he has served at least two thirds of his sentence, the judge at Croydon Crown Court ruled.

Det Const Corinne Turner, who works at the historic abuse team within the Met that helped bring Owusu-Akyeaw before the court, praised the victims’ bravery.

“This man carried out a horrendous series of offences against young children over a number of years,” she said.

“Thankfully his victims told police what had happened to them during their childhood and the subsequent investigation brought this man to justice.

“I would like to pay particular tribute to this man’s victims who had the courage to speak to police about the historic abuse they have suffered.”
