Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was the last king of Benin Kingdom in 1897 when the British sacked the city, looted its beautiful bronzes from his palace and forced him into exile.

  1. The British Museum has a formidable number of these and says itself: “There are over 900 plaques of this type in various museums in England, Europe and America. They are thought to have been made in matching pairs and fixed to pillars in the Oba’s palace in Benin City.”

    In the late 1990s, firebrand UK politician Bernie Grant campaigned to get Glasgow to return the Benin bronzes in its possession. He said at the time: “These belong to a living culture and have a deep historic and social value which goes far beyond the aesthetic and monetary value which they hold in exile.”
